A Plain Parallel to John 17:5

John 17:5 is often read as if Jesus is claiming personal preexistence beside the Father.

But the passage is about glory.

Here is a down-to-earth parallel:

Before the house existed, the master already possessed the glory by which the house would be built.

The plan was not the glory.
The house was not the glory.

The glory was the master’s own inward power, excellence, and skill, later made visible in the finished house.

When the son entered the finished house as heir, he was brought into the glory that had always belonged to the master before the house existed.

No one would think the son had to be walking around before the house existed.

No one would think the house itself was the glory.

No one would confuse the master’s plan with the master’s inward excellence.

The point is simpler:

The glory belonged to the master before the house existed.

The house made that glory visible.

The son inherited and occupied what the master built.

That is the movement of John 17:5.

Jesus says:

“Glorify Me with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world existed.”

The glory was with the Father before the world.

The Son comes in time.

The eternal glory of God is now brought into visible realization in the Son.

So John 17:5 is not about a second divine person returning to a former heavenly status.

It is about God-held glory now manifested in the appointed Son.

The glory was eternally God’s.
The world becomes the visible stage.
The Son receives and manifests that glory.
The Father is glorified in the Son.
