Sin in the Flesh, Life in the Messiah

Why Salvation Must Judge the Hardware and Replace the Life Source

[natural_tts]

Introduction

The gospel is not a motivational program and it is not a moral upgrade. It is God confronting a real human condition that cannot be repaired from the outside. That condition is twofold.

  1. A corrupted life source: humanityโ€™s spiritual element is cut off from Godโ€™s life, so the human soul-being is born spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1).
  2. A corrupted physical condition: the flesh is not neutral. It is cursed, mortal, and bound to death, โ€œsoldโ€ to sin in its condition (Romans 7:14; Romans 8:20โ€“21).

If salvation only addresses the โ€œinnerโ€ side, it leaves the body problem intact. If salvation only addresses the โ€œouterโ€ side, it leaves the life source dead. Scripture addresses both. It judges sin in the flesh and it replaces the life source by bringing Godโ€™s own life into the human being (Romans 8:3โ€“4; Galatians 4:6).

That is why incarnation is not God โ€œvisiting.โ€ It is ontological union, so that judgment can occur where the problem actually lives, and so that new life can be imparted where the person actually dies. This is not โ€œGod piloting a human shell.โ€ The human โ€œIโ€ remains a real human soul with real willing, learning, suffering, and obedience, while the life source is divine (Hebrews 5:8; Luke 2:52).

What โ€œSinโ€ Names in Paulโ€™s Logic

Paulโ€™s language forces precision. He does not speak as though sin is merely โ€œbad choices.โ€ He describes something operating within the human condition that is not identical to the โ€œI.โ€

Romans 7 is a window into how Paul experiences the human predicament. He says:

  • โ€œWhat I do not want, I doโ€ (Romans 7:15).
  • โ€œIt is no longer I, but sin that dwells in meโ€ (Romans 7:17).
  • โ€œI see another law in my membersโ€ (Romans 7:23).

Paul draws a sharp identity line. There is an โ€œI,โ€ the personal self, the conscious soul. And there is โ€œsin dwelling,โ€ operating in the members, in the flesh. This is not Paul excusing himself. It is Paul naming a real condition that enslaves the person from within the bodily life.

If you flatten this into โ€œprincipleโ€ language only, you lose Paulโ€™s lived distinction. If you turn sin into a separate conscious being, you break the text and turn the human into a demon-host. Paul does neither. He describes an internal resident reality of sin in the flesh that functions like an enslaving intruder without being a second person.

The result is a human being trapped between two operative realities. One pulls the soul downward into independence-from-God life (Romans 7:23). The other, when Christ is present, supplies life from God (Romans 8:2; Galatians 2:20).

The Human Condition Is a Two-System Failure

A clean way to describe this is a two-system failure.

  • The life system fails: spiritual death, meaning separation from Godโ€™s life (Ephesians 2:1).
  • The body system fails: mortal flesh, cursed and condemned, bound to death (Romans 8:10; Romans 8:20).

Think of a computer: software and hardware. A critical failure does not remain isolated. It cascades. If the power system is corrupted and the hardware is compromised, a mere software patch does not save the machine. You need both a new power source and a new framework for operation.

That is what Paul is describing across Romans 7โ€“8.

Romans 7 shows the trapped condition. Romans 8 shows the resolution: sin condemned in the flesh, and new life introduced from God (Romans 8:3โ€“4).

So salvation is not only forgiveness of acts. It is God judging the condition and terminating the root.

  • Old system: flesh driven independence (Romans 7:18โ€“23)
  • New system: union life source (Romans 8:2; Galatians 2:20)
  • Old outcome: corruption and death (Romans 5:12; Romans 8:6)
  • New outcome: life and freedom (Romans 8:1โ€“2; 2 Corinthians 5:17)

Why the Flesh Must Be Judged

Scripture says sin is condemned โ€œin the fleshโ€ (Romans 8:3). That matters, because the flesh is where the death-condition expresses itself as a lived reality.

The flesh is not merely โ€œa body that sometimes does bad things.โ€ The flesh is the inherited mortal condition, already under curse, already subject to death (Genesis 3:17โ€“19). That is why physical death is universal and unavoidable (Romans 5:12).

And that is why resurrection is not the refurbishment of the old hardware. Scripture moves toward a new body, a new kind of embodiment (1 Corinthians 15:42โ€“49). The old condition is not repaired. It is terminated.

This is not โ€œbecause God likes upgrades.โ€ It is because the old body-condition is tied to death. The flesh is the site of judgment because the flesh is the site of the problem.

Why the Messiah Must Be Fully Human

If the problem truly resides in the human condition, then the redeemer must be truly kin.

Kinship is not solved by โ€œmore divinity.โ€ Kinship requires real participation in our human emergence.

Jesus is fully human, a real soul-being born of a woman (Galatians 4:4). He inherits the physical condition of humanity through Mary. He enters the same mortal frame that every human knows, including suffering, weakness, hunger, fatigue, and vulnerability to death (Hebrews 2:14โ€“17).

If Jesus did not truly share our flesh, then the cross becomes a staged drama and obedience becomes a foregone conclusion. Scripture refuses that. The Messiah is tested, suffers, and learns obedience in the real world (Hebrews 2:18; Hebrews 5:8).

This is not God pretending to be human. It is God taking the human condition seriously enough to enter it.

Why the Messiah Must Also Be Divine in Life Source

Kinship solves only one side. Mediation is the other.

A mediator must bridge what humanity cannot bridge. Humanity cannot generate life from within itself because its life source is dead toward God (Ephesians 2:1). The problem is not merely that humans behave badly. The problem is that humans are born into a system that tries to sustain life apart from God.

So how does divine life enter without flattening Jesus into a puppet or splitting Him into stacked compartments?

The answer is the incarnation as ontological union. God, who is Soul, by His Spirit, gives His own Form as the spiritual element in the emergence of Jesus (Luke 1:35). That Form functions as Jesusโ€™ spiritual infrastructure. Jesus is fully human in soul and body, and His life source is divine.

This does not mean a divine component replaces a human mind or human soul. Jesus is a complete human soul-being, born of woman, with a real human psyche and will. The uniqueness is His spirit-origin at emergence, because He has no human father, so the Adamic dead spirit-source is not the origin of His life (Luke 1:35). This preserves full kinship in the physical condition through Mary (Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 2:14), while securing a non-Adamic spirit-origin at emergence, meaning His spiritual infrastructure is Godโ€™s own Form given as the spiritual element, not an inherited dead spirit-source (Luke 1:35).

This is why Paul can say โ€œGod was in the Messiahโ€ (2 Corinthians 5:19) while also preserving Jesusโ€™ real human obedience, real choices, and real suffering (Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 5:8).

The goal is not to turn Jesus into โ€œa second God.โ€ The goal is to state what Scripture states: God is truly present in the Messiah, not merely alongside Him. Paul does not say โ€œGod was in us reconciling the world.โ€ He says โ€œGod was in the Messiah reconciling the world to Himselfโ€ (2 Corinthians 5:19), because โ€œin Him all the fullness of Deity dwells bodilyโ€ (Colossians 2:9).

โ€œMade Sinโ€ and โ€œSinful Fleshโ€ as Condition Language

When Scripture says โ€œmade sin,โ€ it is not saying Jesus committed sin. It is not saying God poured a substance called โ€œsinโ€ onto Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).

It is saying God entered the human death-condition in the only place it can be judged: the flesh (Romans 8:3).

Jesus โ€œknew no sinโ€ in His personal self, His soul (2 Corinthians 5:21). He is not morally corrupt. He is not a sinner. Yet He truly carries the mortal condition in the flesh He inherited from Mary (Hebrews 2:14).

Did Jesus have the indwelling sin problem in His flesh?.

Paul locates โ€œsin dwellingโ€ in the members, in the flesh (Romans 7:17; Romans 7:23). God condemned sin โ€œin the fleshโ€ by sending the Son in the likeness of sinful flesh (Romans 8:3). So the pull of the resident condition belongs to the mortal frame Jesus truly shares through Mary (Hebrews 2:14), not to a protected bubble. Yet Jesus โ€œknew no sinโ€ as personal self (2 Corinthians 5:21), because He never consents to flesh-independence and never derives life from that condition. He lives from the divine life-source given as His spiritual infrastructure, and this is exactly why His obedience is real and meaningful (John 6:57; Hebrews 5:8).

So โ€œmade sinโ€ is condition language: the Messiah enters the zone where sin reigns, and He enters it fully, not as a visitor, but in union.

The judgment lands where the condition lives. Forgiveness is real precisely because the condition was judged. In Paul, pardon is not paperwork, it is the outcome of sin being condemned in the flesh and a new life-source being given (Romans 8:3โ€“4; 2 Corinthians 5:19; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

Obedience as the Daily Choice of Life Source

If the resident sin in the flesh is real, then obedience is also real.

Jesus does not live by deriving life from the flesh. He lives from the divine spiritual infrastructure given in His emergence. That is the heart of His obedience. It is not โ€œGod forcing a script.โ€ It is the real human soul choosing, moment by moment, to live from Godโ€™s life rather than from fleshly independence (John 5:19; John 6:57).

This gives meaning to temptation, suffering, prayer, endurance, and finally the cross.

It also prevents two distortions:

  • Jesus as mere moral hero, just an example.
  • Jesus as divine cosplay, an untouchable actor who cannot truly be tested.

Scripture gives neither. It gives the real man in whom God is truly present (2 Corinthians 5:19), and the real human obedience that is learned and proved under pressure (Hebrews 5:8).

Paulโ€™s Threefold Inner Conflict and the Missing Knowledge

Paulโ€™s testimony reveals a profound inner structure of experience within one person.

  • The โ€œIโ€ as personal self (Romans 7:17).
  • The indwelling sin in the flesh that wages war (Romans 7:23).
  • Christ present within as the life source of a new reality (Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:10).

This is why ignorance is deadly. Without this knowledge, people remain trapped in religious performance. They try harder, vow more, promise more, punish themselves more. That does not starve the resident sin. It often feeds it, because the flesh loves law, loves self-effort, loves the loop of striving (Romans 7:8โ€“11).

Freedom is not found in fighting the resident sin directly as though the personโ€™s identity is the enemy. Freedom is found in living from the new life source.

That is why Paulโ€™s language becomes decisive: โ€œNo longer I, but Christ lives in meโ€ (Galatians 2:20). It is not a poetic metaphor. It is the new operating reality of the redeemed person (Romans 8:2).

The Practical Outcome: Victory by Life, Not by Striving

This changes sanctification from pressure to life.

The victory is not achieved by obsessive warfare against the resident sin. The victory is achieved by starving it.

How?

  • By receiving Godโ€™s life as actual life-source (Galatians 4:6).
  • By walking in the reality of Christ present within (Romans 8:10โ€“11).
  • By refusing to derive identity from the fleshโ€™s impulses and scripts (Romans 8:5โ€“6; Romans 6:13).

The resident sin thrives on law-based life. It weakens when the soul lives by Godโ€™s life.

So the gospel is not โ€œbe better.โ€ The gospel is โ€œbe made aliveโ€ (Ephesians 2:5).

Conclusion

Salvation must address the human condition as it actually is.

  • The flesh is mortal, cursed, and bound to death. It must be judged and terminated (Romans 8:3; 1 Corinthians 15:42โ€“49).
  • The life source is dead toward God. It must be replaced by Godโ€™s life (Ephesians 2:1; Galatians 4:6).
  • The soul is the โ€œI,โ€ trapped between the resident sin in the flesh and the life of Christ within (Romans 7:17; Galatians 2:20).

That is why the Messiah must be fully human, and that is why the Messiah must be divine in life source. Not by stacked natures, not by external indwelling, not by moral imitation alone, but by ontological union.

God was in the Messiah reconciling the world to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:19). That is not โ€œGod living in Jesus the way He lives in all of us.โ€ That is God entering the human death-condition at its root, judging sin in the flesh (Romans 8:3), and establishing a new life-source that can actually set human beings free (Romans 8:2; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

And that is why the gospel produces real victory. Not by performance. By life.

2. ๐—ค: Does Paulโ€™s โ€œIt is no longer I, but sinโ€ give me a โ€œget out of jail freeโ€ card?

5. ๐—ค: Why didnโ€™t God just fix my hardware the moment I was saved?

It proves that Godโ€™s life is greater than the death-condition, even while the death-condition is still present.

6. ๐—ค: If Jesus had โ€œsinful flesh,โ€ why didnโ€™t He eventually sin?
๐—”: Number one Sin defined as any attempt, weather good bad or religious, is to produce or sustain life apart from God by one own self human effort. He never derived His identity or His life from the fleshly impulses. He lived entirely from the Fatherโ€™s life (John 6:57). The โ€œhardwareโ€ sent the signal, but the ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ never processed the request.

7. ๐—ค: How is this different from โ€œPositive Thinkingโ€?
๐—”: Positive thinking is the โ€œIโ€ trying to talk itself into a better state. This is an ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†. Itโ€™s not about thinking you have new life; itโ€™s about operating from a ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ that is already present because of the Messiahโ€™s union with you. 8. ๐—ค: Does โ€œstarving the fleshโ€ mean I have to be an ascetic (punishing the body)?
๐—”: No. Asceticism is actually a โ€œfleshlyโ€ attempt to fix the flesh (Colossians 2:23). โ€œStarvingโ€ simply means refusing to give the indwelling sin the โ€œ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟโ€ of your attention. You ignore the โ€œdeadโ€ scripts of the old system by focusing on the โ€œ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒโ€ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† of Christ in you. You donโ€™t beat a dead horse; you just stop trying to ride it.

You feel the pull because youโ€™re still in the old hardware, but you are no longer obligated to obey its scripts.
